Dr. prellop discusses cervical cancer

While a national television campaign urges women to “Tell Your Friends” about the HPV virus, the cause, treatment and a potential vaccination for cervical cancer is also flooding print and broadcast media. Local physician Dr. Perri Prellop will delve into the affects of the disease in greater detail in a half-hour feature broadcast on Cox Channel 9 and the Internet at www.KDCG.com.

Prellop, a physician with OncoLogics, Inc. and a leading local medical professional involved with the treatment of cervical cancer, will shed light on the disease and its grip on women worldwide on “Health Wise,” the weekly medical information show on KDCG that provides viewers with the most extensive local information on health care.

Prellop will also be featured on the website broadcast, an interactive counterpart to the show, which is available online during the regular television broadcast of the Cervical Cancer `Health Wise program using the streaming video link.

Prellop is a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She has been recognized by the American Federation for Medical Student Research and was honored at the LSU Medical Research Day for her work in Gene Therapy.

“Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that we are able to screen for. The most important message to get out is for women to have their annual pap smear. The key to survival is early detection,” said Dr. Prellop.

Using state-of-the-art technologies, women can not only vaccinate themselves from a virus known as a risk factor associated with cervical cancer, new treatment options have also been discovered such as non-invasive Tomotherapy.

“This allows physicians to treat tumors without harming the healthy tissues surrounding it,” said Dr. Prellop.
