High and Low Dose
Rate Brachytherapy Implants
Low Dose Rate (LDR)
LDR
involves the temporary placement of
catheters into the tumor site while the patient is anesthetized.
After surgery the radioactive source is placed through the
catheter directly to the tumor site. Hospitalization is required
for the patient for 24 to 96 hours under special radiation
guidelines.
High Dose Rate (HDR)
HDR
is the rapid use of a radioactive material
(isotopes) placed directly in contact with the cancer tissue.
This computer remote controlled afterloading technique is
used for gynecologic tumors and cancers of the esophagus,
head, neck, lung and sarcoma. HDR is an outpatient procedure
that has largely eliminated the need to hospitalize the patient.
