SIRT – Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRSpheres)

A revolutionary treatment for advanced liver cancer that utilizes new technologies designed to deliver radiation directly to the tumor site. The targeted nature of SIRT effectively delivers up to 40 times more radiation to liver tumors than is possible using conventional radiotherapy. The SIRT process increases the effectiveness of tumor treatment while minimizing harmful side effects to surrounding healthy tissue.

SIRT involves the delivery of millions of microscopic radioactive spheres called SIRSpheres, directly to the site of the liver tumor. SIRSpheres are approximately 35 micron in diameter biocompatible YTTrim-90 micro-spheres that are emitting radioactive beta radiation. The SIRSpheres are injected through a trans-femoral catheter into the hepatic artery. The spheres lodge in the small blood vessels of the tumor. The spheres irradiate the tumor thus destroying the cancer tumors while most of the normal liver tissue remains relatively unaffected.
