ONCOLOGICS OFFICIALLY OPENED ONLY CANCER CENTER IN LOUISIANA DEDICATED TO WOMEN

On Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 10:00am, OncoLogics’ CentreWomen held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the centre. The ribbon cutting ceremony held at CentreWomen, located in Lafayette at 5000 Ambassador Caffery Pkwy., Bldg. 4., was well attended. Lafayette Mayor Joey Durel was on-hand to welcome the center and acknowledge this bold step in healthcare for the entire Acadiana region. Dr. M. Maitland DeLand, FACR, FACRO, CEO and President of OncoLogics, Inc. has opened this center, not only because of her extensive experience with female cancer patients and diagnoses, but also her personal understanding and appreciation of the different physiological and emotional needs of women who have been diagnosed with cancer, after her mother was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. The Centre hopes to improve on outcomes for women treated for cancer at the clinic, and to address the additional physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of women coping with cancer, while offering most modern and up-to-date radiation oncology treatment options currently available.

“Our goal is to treat the woman patient more effectively by not only treating their cancers, but also by helping them diminish or alleviate the effects of radiation therapy – such as radiation-induced burns to the skin, and hair loss.”

"Our goal is to treat the woman patient more effectively by not only treating their cancers, but also by helping them diminish or alleviate the effects of radiation therapy – such as radiation-induced burns to the skin, and hair loss. We also hope to provide them with a source of education and information so they are aware of all the other services that are available to them in this community. In this model, the patient’s role also changes, from a passive recipient to an active participant, learning treatment options, choices, actions and attitudes that affect their condition. Becoming active in the healing process is empowering, a real source of strength, which we feel assists our patients in combating the disease process," stated Dr. DeLand.

OncoLogics’ CentreWomen will be the first of it’s kind, incorporating new techniques and therapies. At the centre, we hope to help patients develop a survivorship plan specifically for their needs. These plans will provide information and resources for future medical needs, nutritional advice, exercise regimen, and other information promoting the overall health and wellness of our patients.
